In August
2004, at age eleven, Kenuzy was sent to the Center for Great Apes
along with the twins Jonah and Jacob. They arrived one week before
Hurricane Charley devastated the sanctuary, but were safe and
sound inside one of the very strong nighthouses. Kenuzy is a
very handsome and large adolescent male chimpanzee. As he nears
adulthood, he is gaining more confidence in his associations with
the other chimpanzees in his group (Jonah, Jacob, Daisy,
Maggie, Ellie, and Bella). However he has one habit left over from
his early years that is out-of-place with his macho image. When he
“displays” marching around his habitat, throwing barrels in
the air, and looking very in
charge and massive, he ends his adult male display by sitting
down quietly and sucking his thumb! While Kenuzy
socializes well with the four females, his constant companions are
the adolescent twins Jonah and Jacob. The three of them rarely
have squabbles and spend lots of time male-bonding. Kenuzy loves
enrichment activities, especially painting and “reach treats.”
He likes all fruits and most vegetables, but will not
eat his cruciferous veggies – broccoli and cauliflower. |
