Our sanctuary home is located in Wauchula, which is in south central Florida, on
100 acres a few miles from the beautiful Peace River.
The chimpanzees and orangutans are currently housed in ten large domed enclosures 34 feet high surrounded by a tropical forest setting of oak, pine, magnolia, sweet gum, willow, bamboo, guava, mango, and banana trees as well as other flora including citrus and exotic fruits. Each large domed habitat has attached nighthouses with ropes, swings, and hammocks, which not only provide a place to sleep at night, but also a place to rest during the day. An elevated 3000 foot tunnel system (the Boswell "Walk-About" Chute System) connects all the enclosures allowing both the orangutans and the chimpanzees the freedom to run through the woods and across the creek. The largest Chimpanzee habitat is more than 30 feet high and 60 feet long, providing Grub and his group with plenty of running room and climbing space. Our newest habitat for orangutans is 34 feet high and the tallest enclosure at the sanctuary allowing adult orangutans space and height for swinging through their environment. The new Arcus Great Ape Health Center includes a veterinary clinic, an indoor/outdoor quarantine facility for new arrivals, a commissary for ape-meal preparations (with a large walk-in cooler to store large amounts of fresh produce), and a laundry to clean many ape blankets daily. |
