Fire Hose Hammock

Hammock made from firehose provides a sturdy place for apes to sleep & nest.  It also provides shade outdoors.  Hammocks can be made to any desired size.

Supplies (makes a 6’x6’ hammock)-

  • At least 100 feet of firehose- Very Heavy!! (Sometimes donated by local fire departments)

  • 20- ½” bolts, nuts, & 40 washers

  • Drill (3/4” bit) and hacksaw

  • Locktight or hammer & chisel to damage bolt threads

Instructions:

Using hacksaw, cut firehose into 10 – 8ft lengths and 2 – 16ft lengths.  Lay out two longer lengths in a north-south direction about 6ft apart.  Take 4 – 8ft lengths and place them equally between the longer pieces- also in a north-south direction.  Then, one at a time, weave the remaining 6 short pieces in a east-west direction; going over, under, over, under the north-south pieces.  Leave about one foot around all the edges of the short pieces (in order to tuck under and bolt) and 4 feet on the ends of the two longer pieces (in order to hang).  Once the hammock is assembled, tuck the ends under and drill through both layers to create holes where bolt will secure hammock in place.  Secure with all 20 bolts & nuts and 40 washers (5 on each side)- on bolt insert washer, 1st firehose piece, 2nd firehose piece, 1st firehose piece, washer, then nut.  Leave the longer pieces loose in order to hang hammock in ape enclosure.  Remember to tighten all nuts securely and use locktight or damage threads of bolt with chisel to prevent apes from unscrewing nut and bolts.
