Grooming Boards

A grass door mat is securely attached to a plastic board (cutting board) and hung outside of the ape enclosure.  Peanut butter, sunflower seeds, and other treats are spread and pressed into the mat.  Apes must then groom through the grassy mat to obtain the treats.

Supplies (makes 4-6 boards)-

  • 4-6 cheap plastic cutting boards (~ 8” x 10” size)
  • 1 grassy “welcome” door mat (unused)
  • 4-6 carabineers or quick links
  • 10-12 feet of 1” metal stripping- Ό” or less thickness
  • 48-72 -  ½” – 1” length screws (should not go completely through cutting board when finished)
  • Scissors & Drill

Instructions:

Cut grass mat into 4-6 square pieces.  Size should fit within cutting board.  Remove 1” of grass around the edge of each piece, so metal stripping will lay flat.  Cut metal stripping to fit on edge of grass mat around all four sides.  Secure metal stripping to grass mat and cutting board by drilling 3 screws around each side.  Attach one carabineer to the cutting board handle or by drilling a hole on top.

To Use:

Spread treats into mat.  Secure board to outside of enclosure using carabineer.  Apes may also use browse to obtain treats.
