Treat Dipping Boards

A board with several holes is hung outside ape enclosure.  Using a stick tool, the ape dips stick into hole to obtain treat- applesauce, BBQ sauce, pudding, etc.

Supplies (makes 1 board)-

  • 1- 2’x2’ piece of plywood

  • 4-  Floor Flange (3-4") (flat metal “doughnut-shaped” w/ female threading for 1” PVC tube)
  • 8- ¼’ or ½” bolts & nuts

  • 4- 1” PVC tube, about 6” in length

  • 4- 1” PVC male fittings

  • 4- 1” PVC end caps

  • PVC glue

  • 2- 1 foot lengths of chain

  • 2- carabineers or quick links

  • Drill (¼” or ½” bit & ¾” bit)

Instructions:

On the plywood, drill four large (¾”) holes equally spaced around the plywood.  Attach the metal fittings over the holes and attach with the bolts facing the flat plywood side- the nuts should be on the same side as the metal fitting.  Create the PVC dipping tubes by gluing the PVC cap on one end of the 1” PVC tube and the male fitting on the opposite end.  You should create a total of 4 dipping tubes.  On the top corners of the plywood, drill holes and insert chain, so that plywood can be hung on enclosure using carabineers.  Allow PVC glue to dry completely.

To Use:

Fill PVC dipping tubes with treats (applesauce, oatmeal, jelly, etc.) and screw male end into female metal fitting.  Then attach plywood to outside of enclosure with tubes facing away from apes and the plain holes towards them.  Provide apes with long, stick-like browse.
